busy busy week

man, but this week was so killer.

  • monday: normal day. mostly. busy but normal. meetings at work etc. to make things seem stagnant and unproductive.
  • tuesday: in normal time, out at 5:30 to meet serena for dinner in nyc. home and worked on stuff while sitting on couch.
  • wednesday: in to work by 6:30, leave at 3:45 and dash to NYC to try and buy worms from green market. thunderstorms have scared everyone away. head to alumni council meeting at 5:30-8. Home and more work while on the couch.
  • thursday: in to work by 6:30, leave at 4:45 to attend on the rooftop party. after party home. work on train in and out of city. work on couch for 45 min. until keep dozing off over keyboard. sigh.
  • friday: in to work by 7AM. trip to Trenton with client to the state for a meeting. back to work. tonight I need to make a dolly hand-off in n. brunswick after work so I need to stay here until 5:30 or 6 or so. I am so tired already! I think I might start drinking some coffee this afternoon.

on the upside, I did clear a lot of things off of my plate. on the downside I’m still behind on a couple of projects, and I have a deliverable to the state next friday. on the other upside, it’s friday! and I can get some rest tonight! bu7t on the other downside, I don’t know if I can sleep in tomorrow b/c for the last 3 weeks in a row there have been noisy men repointing my building.

I have to say, though, the friday thing trumps a lot of downsides. Thank GOODNESS I don’t have to come to work at 6:30 am tomorrow. THANK GOODNESS.

new years goals

I have a few resolutions for the new year, but they’re kind of big ticket things like “floss and take vitamins,” “really remember to go to the gym regularly,” or “work towards a more just and peaceful society.” really, what I like is new years goals. it keeps me on track, but it doesn’t set me up for failure.

here are a few I’m thinking of. they’re not as specific as some of my monthly goals can be, but they’re a good set of starting points for the new year.

financial goals

  1. read your money or your life and implement important $ strategies
  2. keep track of all $ spent for month of january
  3. catch up and keep checkbook balanced

crafty goals

  1. finish corn baby stat
  2. knit a sweater
  3. use up skirt fabrics – I’ve got material for at least 6 more skirts, so get to it!
  4. really commit to buy vs. make – repurpose clothes rather than buy new ones
  5. use up CSA foods more efficiently

other goals

  1. read 100 books again
  2. inventory and sell off MK stock

this is just a simple list of things that I ought to be doing, or things that are important enough to get done or to incorporate into my lifestyle that I make a point of publically committing. nothing scary, and no big statements like “I HERETOFOR RESOLVE TO…”
y’all have any interesting new years resolutions or goals I should know about?

(exhausting horrible no good very bad) week in review

Monday: best day of the bunch. was tired from the pittsburgh trip but compensated with a manicure. not too shabby.

Tuesday: worked until roughly 4AM. had a horrible, no good, very bad time. little fight at work with a dude who didn’t even START working on my stuff until monday, and then might have fibbed a little about it. yuck.

Wednesday: found out about poopwater. BIG fight with dude who didn’t get me my stuff. it involved several back and forth emails, several urgent voice mails from him, a call to his supervisor, and a sad email written by me to the PM apologizing for the delays and the frustration. UGH. had to leave to clean up poopy storage unit. yuck.

Thursday: MORE WORK. when will it end! stayed until 5AM getting report totally done and emailed to the PM.

Friday: slept in a little. drove to edison for work with my manager, worked hard all day, left at 3 to drive to mahwah for a review of one of my supervisorees, left at 5PM and drove to albany. nearly fell asleep on the drive.

the best part of the week was definately realizing as I drove to work this morning that I had two rifles and an open bottle of wine in my car. I am classy! and also, lucky to not have gotten into an accident! how would I explain THAT situation?

not so much to-done

so, I got just about nothing done this week. I DID succeed in getting very very tired an not so healthy feeling. sigh. So this is the list from before with everything still left to do:

  • clean the kitchen, including the mopping of the floor. [[might not do. non priority.]]
  • donate clothes that are in my hall [[might have them live in my car for the weekend.]]
  • finish cleaning the living room. areas that are outstanding are small, but include: the stuff on one of my end tables and a bunch of magazines on the floor. also a box of crafty things that will go to the basement until I can find a place for them to live in my apartment.
  • clean my bedroom. this is bigger. will take some serious work.
  • hang things on the walls: old photo of my family, pressed metal stork, tin-can flower paintings, mountain dulcimer, ceramic horses head, gramma’s weaving.
  • laundry, including two new sheet sets.
  • sew cocktail dress. I have the fabric (repurposing some fabric we’d bought for curtains in pgh and never used) and the pattern (a butterick vintage reissue of a sheath dress with an interesting open neckline. [[am halfway done with this. was up until 3:30 last night! yuck!]]
  • shopping and making of horse doovers. [[will shop sat. morning and lorelei will come help me cook and test cocktails at around 3. YAY.]]
  • hairs cut. [[appt. for 10:30 am sat.]]

tonight is our office holiday party, but I have to not stay out too late, because 1. I’m pooped and 2. I have to get up early on sat. to clean my apartment. then is the hairscut, and then to the shops. Hopefully I’ll have enough time to finish sewing my dress. I hope! I’m getting totally worried that I will have to wear a bath towel to my own cocktail party. while I totally rock the bath towel look, it’s not what I was hoping for.

pre-cocktail party list to do

in prep. for my very exciting traditional cocktail party full of interesting people this sat., I have a serious list of things to do. so serious that when a PM in the MD office asked if I could come down for a day this week I said “HECK NO” and then had to straighten my schedule out before I called him back and said “oh, how about Wednesday?” Which, luckily, isn’t good for him, so I won’t be traveling this week.
of course, now that my couch is covered I’m feeling kind of awesome about the other stuff I have to do. no big deal, right?

  • clean the kitchen, including the mopping of the floor. I have put away most of the china/dishes from gramma’s house so that’s something.
  • donate clothes that are in my hall
  • shopping and making of horse doovers. I will ask for help to do this on sat.
  • hairs cut. sat. also.

all this, and then there are the following work functions that I need to squeeze in:

  • Tuesday: dinner with co-workers?
  • Wednesday: drinks with new company we’re merging with?
  • Thursday: making a diaper cake for a coworker who is going out on maternity leave this week?
  • Friday: office party
  • Monday-Friday: working my day job.

So. Not too bad. [insert sound of manical laughter here.] the way I think it will work is today after work I will do beauty things (I am having my legs waxed for the first time! eee!) and I’ll clean the kitchen for real. Tomorrow after dinner I will cut the dress and start sewing. See also Wednesday, Thursday. Thursday I will do laundry and clean my bedroom. The plan is to have everything done by Friday morning so I can wake up on Sat., get a hair cut, and go to market for appetizer supplies. And then I can spend the day mixing drinks and piping soft cheese onto crackers instead of finishing my dress, cleaning my house, AND piping soft cheese.

tonight

already I’m not beating myself up for not getting to work early today.

tonight I’m going to:

  • go to ikea for shelves;
  • go to lowes for a staple gun;
  • go home and sew fabric together;
  • eat sardines for dinner;
  • go to the grocery store and get fixings for green bean casserole; and
  • go to bed right after therapy.

Maybe I can do the early to rise thing tomorrow. we’ll see.

overly ambitious

this weekend I had very ambitious plans, as related to aurora:

  • girls night sleep-over with college friends on friday night
  • clean out my ceder chest
  • unpack and photograph stuff from gramma’s house
  • sew couch cover
  • sew new skirt (if possible)
  • go to Japanese travel agent to firm up plans for Japan trip in spring with stepsis on sat.
  • meet crafty friend lorelei for tea and cocktail hostess planning session

what really happened:

  • girls night sleep-over with college friends on friday night. drank too much, got sick next day. sigh.
  • unpack and reboxed some stuff from gramma’s house. no photographs. didn’t put away, b/c ceder chest still full.
  • bought fabric for couch, but was totally different fabric than had been obsessing about. didn’t sew anything.
  • went to Japanese travel agent with rachel on sat. but didn’t firm up anything as tickets to japan = teh pricy.
  • met crafty friend lorelei for tea and cocktail hostess planning session.
  • thought I’d lost work laptop, paniced, went to work and found it safely there. oops.
  • set up a kayak.com thingy to tell me what prices are for airline tickets to japan. you know, just in case.

Something exciting that I DID do:

  • went to the fabric warehouse for the first time and it was AMAZING. so big, so much stuff, and so cheap. I bought 4 different patterned suiting fabric in long enough lengths to make skirts and 13+ yds of upholstery fabrick for about 70 bucks. SWEET. special shout-out to kathleen for spending 6 hours with me, 2 of which were at the fabric warehouse in total indecision.
  • ate 6 eggs. maggie gave me some farm fresh eggs last weekend and I hadn’t eaten them at all. they are so good. not fresh enough still for me to poach, but lightly fried? yum. so extra golden tasty.

and, in the interest of getting everything done that needs doing:

  • monday: go to work early, get work done. leave work on time, go home, do laundry. also, sew on couch a bit. get stuff for green bean casserole
  • tuesday: eat dinner with gal pals. throw together green bean casserole.
  • wednesday: thanksgiving potluck feast at work. go home. sew on couch.
  • thursday: up and at them. go to albany early. eat food. yum.
  • friday-sat. family and old coworkers time.
  • sunday: go home early am in order to 1. beat traffic and 2. sew on couch. also, pick out fancy party dress pattern. commence sewing.
  • monday through friday. sew on cocktail dress and make sure apartment is clean.
  • sat.: cocktail party day. make elaborate and old fashioned appetizers, including tomato aspic. beautiful.
  • sunday: enjoy clean apartment and covered couch. bask in accomplishments.

week in advance #2

  • Monday: on-site training at big army job site. Laundry and grocery shopping. Gym? dare I dream?
  • Tuesday: mtg with old coworkers and dream future co-business owners after work
  • Wednesday: black tie dinner and reception for the nyc transit museum with work (they bought a table!)
  • Thursday: yoga? dare I dream?
  • Friday: kick off field work activities at a job site near office at 7AM. leave work early to drive to philly to catch my flight to TN.

Yep, I’m flying to TN for 5 days. Gramma is moving to an apartment in Georgia to be closer to people now that everyone has moved away from knoxville. dad and aunt elayne and uncle rick will be helping her pack her things, and I decided to go to make her laugh. I’m pretty good at keeping things light-hearted with her. one of my secret skills.

Actually, friday kicks off a Very Big Week and a Half of travel. I’ll come home next wednesday evening and then work for 2 days before driving to Pittsburgh for Mr. Mariss’ bday celebration. it’s nice of he and Kelly to throw a party that weekend, because if they didn’t I’d feel like I was inviting myself out for a visit. It will be the first Insight trip to PGH! I can’t wait to see my mpg on the trip, esp. through those mountains.

what homemaking means for the weekend of May 6 and 7.

  • hand wash silk scarves
  • fold and put away dry laundry
  • hang all not-to-be-machine-dried laundry
  • make bed with clean sheets
  • air out apartment
  • transplant sprouty herbs and plant some more seeds
  • wash and put away all dishes
  • scrub out tub and bathroom sink with favorite japanese brand of magic eraser
  • clean up food cupboard in kitchen (incl. eating ends of boxes of crackers to make room for other stuff
  • clean off kitchen counter and scrub clean
  • read in bed with clean sheets, freshly aired room, and drying-laundry-humidifier.

birthday preparations

so, I’m having this party on sat. and I’ve decided to do it at my place. I got most of the big housework done earlier, and then I spent at least a week obsessing about how many people I could squeeze into my apartment, but I’m gonna do it. hey, I live in NJ. either people will come, or they won’t, but I bet that it’ll err on the side of people not coming out from NYC.

so, here’s my to do list for the next few weeks so I can get everything done and ready by sat:

Wednesday
* clean up living room, kitchen.
* take large things to basement storage and neaten up hall closet so I can stash microwave if necessary (aka, if I don’t get a chance to make microwave table)
* wash fabric, cut skirt pieces out
* gym after work for cardio

it certainly sounds exciting, doesn’t it? you may have noticed reference to sewing a skirt above. Yes, against all better judgement I have decided once again to undertake a last minute sewing decision. I didn’t mean to, except I *really really* want a green skirt and I *really really* need a shorter than my knees skirt and I *really really* refuse to go shopping, so I HAVE to make one. I went to the rag shop last night and came home with 3 patterns, 4 pieces of fabric (3 of which are upholstry fabric) and various threads and notions. I hope to get a jump on the setup for the skirt so I can sew it quickly on friday night… HOPE. Dream!

to done list.

this weekend was alarmingly productive, though I still am not 100% to done. of course, this puts me in the awkward position of having finished NEARLY enough to make me sure I can have a party at my place… hrm.

ha, and don’t worry. photos aplenty coming up.

I think I’ll finish moving in this weekend.

This weekend is all about the planning for the birthday party. It might also be called spring cleaning, or even moving in. I want to have a party at my place in 2 weeks, and next weekend I’ll be off to Albany for family party, so this is the only time I’ll be able to scrap my apartment into any kind of non-embarassing, having people over, having places for people to rest their drinks when the boogie-down occurs condition.

you might recall I have a comprehensive bunch of “to do” lists hanging up around my apartment. including those items, the comprehensive (I think) list of things I need to do before my home is party-appropriate is:

  • kitchen: shelf for microwave, microwave off of hutch
  • kitchen: get rid of junk boxes
  • kitchen: hang decorative and commemorative american revolution plates
  • kitchen: find bread machine and give away
  • living room: hang photos
  • living room: hang art
  • living room: sort a/v materials and clean under tv/stereo tables
  • living room: try to reconfigure stereo speaker configuration so as to
  • living room: hang light over dining table
  • bathroom: hang shelf, load up with qtips and spare rolls of TP
  • bathroom: frame and hang david hasselhoff
  • bathroom: hang elvis
  • hall: hang big mirror
  • hall: hang misc. religious pictures
  • hall: donate big bags of clothes/books and get out of home
  • hall: put all boxes into the basement
  • living room: finish sorting through/recycling martha stewart magazines
  • living room: put away craft things that are out
  • living room: clean off dining table
  • living room: put away papers from coffee table
  • living room bonus project: replace coffee table with two end tables from basement
  • bedroom: finish putting away craft things
  • bedroom: put together bedside table
  • bedroom: get and use fabric boxes for nylons and knee socks
  • bedroom: take chinese peasant paintings to be framed, hang when received
  • bedroom: clean off dresser

other things I need to do but are pending the arrival of supplies and/or aren’t that important right now are:

  • put up new lamp by couch (requires new, unbroken lamp to be delivered)
  • cover couch (requires fabric)
  • clean out big closet, including sorting through clothes in boxes and getting rid of things that are too small/old/unfashionable.

so, anywhoo. I might be freakin’ busy this weekend, or, because of the glorious weather, I might be outside and my birthday party might be at a kareoke bar. we’ll see on monday!

weekend results

* do laundry, including all sheets.
* go to the gym for ellitical training, knee and for yoga.
* get hair cut tomorrow if they have time for me.
* Make/Pick-up food for NLP in Queens
* go to NLP tomorrow in Queens
* put away blankets from trip to bmore
* sort and put away crafty stuff in bedroom. Make this more fun by separating out planned projects and photographing before restashing.
* tackle piles of crafty things over dining room table. See also pile of crafty things next to my sweet recliner.
* hang lamp over dining room table area.
* listen to audiobook of “pride and prejudice? while homemaking. Only 1 1/2 hour left! I couldn’t do this at all, my renewal license expired. I think I’ll get it from the library to finish off. I’m nearly done, after all!

added on the fly, cause I’m like that:
* sort msl magazines and get them out of living room — I went through 2002, 2003, and 2004. now there’s just 2005 to go through and rip pages from!

weekend list

I’ve been totally into lists lately, as you may have noticed. not for any real reason. but it’s a nice way to think about what I ought to do. and in the rare event I actually DO do things, it’s totally gratifying to cross things out!

so, this weekend I should:
* do laundry, including all sheets.
* go to the gym tonight for ellitical training and knee, and tomorrow for yoga.
* listen to audiobook of “pride and prejudice” while homemaking. Only 1 1/2 hour left!

It would be SO GREAT if I was able to finish my bedroom (which involves sorting crafty things) and to clear off my dining room table (which involves sorting crafty things). That would be SO SO SO GREAT.

But I’m not going to hold my breath.

EDITED.

crap, I already screwed the pooch on this one. it’s 9:40 and I’m just getting ready to leave work. True, I got some stuff done, but heck, it’s 9:40 on a friday night. That means no gym tonight, going to gym tomorrow for knee and yoga, and probably no elliptical trainer. Unless I get up and get to the gym tomorrow at 8AM so as not to miss the 9AM yoga class. heck! 8AM on a sat.! I am going home post-haste and climbing into bed with a romance novel. BOO.

List followup

Things I Actually Did Last Night:

* wash dishes.
* roast eggplant under broiler, pan fry tofu, and cook in Moroccan tagine sauce from trader joe’s. enjoy with whole wheat couscous.
* do laundry.
* finish framing posters for home.
* listen to audiobook of “pride and prejudice” while homemaking.
* (improvised!) sorted books more on bookshelf.

Remaining Ambitious List of Things to do Tonight:
* sort blankets/bedding for upcoming girl trip to baltimore, wash if necessary.
* sort and put away crafty stuff in bedroom. Make this more fun by separating out planned projects and photographing before restashing.
* tackle piles of crafty things over dining room table. See also pile of crafty things next to my sweet recliner.
* drink lots of tea so as to stave off horrible cold that project manager passed along. Try not to feel sad that gym is a Very Bad Idea when you’re fighting horrible post-nasal drip.
* go to sleep early.

New List of Things To Do Tonight:
* have eyebrows waxed
* go to gym for PT
* pack for weekend adventures
* put all laundered clothes away

Let’s Be Frank, This I Will Not Do Tonight:
* hang lamp over dining room table area.
