I’m trying to decide if i should buy a serger. those things range in price between 200 and 2000 dollars, and are really complicated and scary looking with multiple threads and cutting instruments. it’s not a decision I am making uninformed so I got four books from the library all about sewing with sergers. I had to request them, so they came in over a period of days. I also requested female chauvinist pigs, and when I went to pick that up the librarian gave me a funny look. “what,” I said: “I like to read books about sewing machines and feminist theory.” and she totally cracked up.
Misc:
I am very tall. I have bright red hair. I have a black belt in tae kwon do. I knit. I try to spin my own yarn. I read voraciously and indiscriminately. I have a sewing machine, and I constantly plot the making of my own clothes. I like foods that go with red wine. The red wine is coincidental: I also like gin, the drink of washed up movie stars, and margaritas, the drink of pretending either that it is summer, or that what you do tonight won't matter in the morning. I am a motorcycle enthusiast, and I am plotting a carb breakdown to get my bike back on the road. I am a nerdy kind of girl but one with a goal to throw dinner parties wearing aprons and to keep jars of fresh flowers around my home.Categories

My mom got Aurora a serger as a graduation gift for her PhD, and while we haven’t done much with it yet, it seems that there is loads that can be done. We’re starting out simple (first project: tablecloths and napkins) but once we have that under our belt, will probably branch out into the realm of tougher stuff. Let us know what you think of the serger theory books and which of them it might be worth our requesting from the library.
mostly the serger books are from the 80s and seem to have almost the same information in them. I’ll try to pick a couple of “bests” and will pass the names along for you!
Or you could just come to Pittsburgh and try out my serger for yourself and see how you like it. I’m definitely a very basic sewer and a serger novice, but so far it’s fairly simple to use. It seems that the order in which you thread the loopers and needles is very important though! The woman at the serger store also told us about a serger that threads itself, but that seems like a very pricey and unnecessary luxury.
FYI, I have a Babylock BL450.

YOU HAVE A BABYLOCK! that’s the brand that nearly all my crafty friends have and recommend. I think I’ll just bring all my sergey stuff with me for the great race weekend and spend some time making junk. if we didn’t have so much planned for our couples weekend, I would suggest you bring it with! 😉
