The most things on my plate

20120220-210306.jpg
Tonight I made a dry spicy pumpkin dish from my India cookbook. It was delicious! I also made rancho gordo beans and we reheated rice and collards from last night.

We were away all weekend and ate out nearly every meal. It was so tempting to say: let’s head out and get some dinner! But after spending money on meals for 2 days it made more sense to cook at home.

The fact the I was working from home just adds to the no-brainerness of this decision.

Contributing factors may include the part where we didn’t actually get dressed today.

*ahem.*

Octopus!

photo
I’m working on Mike’s xmas gift. (um, yes. Christmas 2011.) Normally I make Mike and the little dudes xmas hats, but this year I wanted to do something a little special for him, and asked him to pick out a mitten pattern from my ravelry favorites. Clearly, he made the best and most obvious choice and picked the Octopus Mittens.

Normally I’m a terribly slow and inconsistent knitter, but these mittens are so rewarding to knit. Between the variation of the orange yarn and the neat pattern, I can’t wait to work on them and see what happens next. This photo is from this morning, and I managed to finish knitting the hand and half of the thumb in the car on my way home from Pittsburgh (oh Mike is awesome for driving) – I can’t wait to cast off and see how it looks all put together. Of course, I will still have to knit Mitten #2, but I am hopeful that it will be almost as exciting as the first one was!

Now, I know some of my new blog/twitter friends are knitters – show yourselves!

Mardi Gras!

It’s a little early this year, but I had a great time at the 9th Annual Sharuchallard Mardi Gras party with the old Pittsburgh Gang. Mike and I drove out on Friday night and stayed with Kelly – we got to play with Erik in the morning and he showed me all his stuff, and then I bought bulk maple syrup and lots of good soap from the Pittsburgh Food Co-Op before heading over to Greenfield for the party.

Jesse and Aurora had bottled beer at the Copper Kettle Brewery near their home, where you can stop by, mix up some beer for a couple of hours, let it ferment at the brewery, and return in 2 weeks to bottle the beer. What a cool idea, right? There’s an article about it here.

Mike blew me away with his “To Kill a Mockingbird” shirt, based on the anniversary edition book cover. When he gets a post up on his blog I’ll link to it directly. And as for Kelly and I – the theme was “A Novel Approach.” Kelly was a tour book for Hawaii, and I was the lady on the cover of this book.  No one could guess, I didn’t even make them try. There are very few people in the 30s to 40s set who have read as many Mary Stewart books as I have, I bet.

Go west!

20120217-181739.jpg

We are heading to Pittsburgh for a party this weekend – driving straight onto this lovely sunset, captured from our front porch.

We have big plans for a motorcycle ride to the ‘burgh – but it’s a little too cold these days, and other times we haven’t had the time on other trip weekends to double the travel time. As it is, we are about 7 hours away. If we go on the bikes we mapped out a brilliant route through the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania along Rt 6 and with stops At other places of note, like Centralia PA.

We are great travelers. We are even better route dreamers! Do you think there’s a market for remote motorcycle trip planning? Like AAA TripTics but without the lobbying against bicycles and public transportationand specifically geared towards the types of roads motorcyclists love?

Rain/Snow/Etc

20120216-222400.jpg

It’s rain-snowing.
It’s dark.
Gots no chance to ride in months.
Mr Mike is at a firehouse meeting.
It’s chilly in our house.

Gots no excuse.
Better open that work laptop up and finish that stuff up that I didn’t get done at the office.

sigh.

Boots

20120215-223840.jpg

I’ve been acquiring a lot of boots lately. The thing that really strikes me is the different uses that people think boots should have – and that the companies that sell them want to make you think they’re good for.

For example – the boots on the left are MIA “motorcycle” boots. The leather is so soft and distressed, and I’ve worn holes in the heels after just a year of wearing them to walk around – think of how they would hold up at stops on a motorcycle! The boots in the middle are Frye  Engineer boots, graciously gifted to me by a friend who didn’t quite fit into them – they are great, and I would be tempted to wear them on the motorcycle. Except! The ones on the right are actual motorcycle boots (the Tourmaster Solutions), and they have ankle protection and a  shifting pad on the left toe so the tops don’t get hopelessly scuffed up. Plus they’re honest-to-goodness waterproof. After riding around in boots that really do protect your whole foot and ankle it’s hard to go back a reduced level of protection – no matter how goofy your feet look in the motorcycle boots.

Of the three boots the REAL motorcycle boots were also the most inexpensive, hilariously. Who knew it was so expensive to look like a motorcyclist, and still be so poorly protected?

Beer, burgers, and bowling

Tonight Mike, Rick, Janice and I went out for the three B’s: beer, burgers, and bowling. It’s hard to think of a better way to spend Valentines Day.

A little valentines happy

20120213-225730.jpg
I am not really a big valentines day person – I mean (avert your eyes!) EVERY DAY is valentines day with my sweet mister. But I think it should be a tiny bit special for the kiddles – and this year maybe I went a little v-day happy!

20120213-225719.jpg

I made sugar cookies and learned a new icing technique (outline and flood), and then made Mike sit down with me to make valentines day cards for the boys. They’re at our house overnight tonight, so when they wake up tomorrow they’ll have some treats waiting for them.

Happy Birthday Peter Cooper!

20120212-222235.jpg

Today Mike and I headed out to Green Wood Cemetery to visit Peter Coopers grave on the occasion of his 221st birthday. It’s a big monument right in the center of the road, and he’s surrounded by members of his family.

It was a super cold day and windy, but it’s always nice to walk hand-in-hand with my sweetheart. I also love any excuse to see my Cooper Union buddies. They are super. And with all that’s been going on with the administrations evaluation of tuition as a revenue source, it was a treat to have some quiet reflection on the man who started this wonderful thing called Cooper Union.

The sheds

20120211-233437.jpg
We don’t have a garage at our house, but we do have a pretty big driveway. We’ve tried to solve the motorcycle parking issue with these plastic tarp sheds – each is about 8’x10′.

The one on the left is three years old, and holds my partners bikes: a 2006 SV650 and a 2007 Vulcan. The one on the right is just two years old and holds my DRZ-400 SM as well as my partners project bike, a 1976 Triumph.

(I am crawling Craigslist for a late-80s/early-90s sports bike to make into my own project bike! Searches for mororcycles for sale between $300-$500 are so much fun.)

The older shed isn’t doing well. Last winter the snow load was a little too much for the aging tarp and it began to shred. We have a newer tarp stretched over the frame of the shed for now like a silver toupee, picturesquely held on with milk jugs filled with water – but we should really find a better solution for next year.

Things I’ve started to do because of motorcycling

20120210-233623.jpg

  • Paint my fingernails: it hides the inevitable dirty nails that comes from riding in mesh gloves in the summer.
  • Learning more about mechanics. Cars are pretty intimidating but motorcycles are much smaller and accessible. I’m not scared to get my hands dirty on one.
  • Exercise! Nothing makes a sports bike more comfortable than a zillion sit-ups. Nothing makes an 8 hour day in the saddle possible (for more than one day at a time) than a general level of fitness.
  • Make sure things are done safely. Even though my job as an environmental engineer requires attention to health and safety, I don’t think I felt as empowered to speak up as I do now – now that I’m accustomed to having a hands-on responsibility to safety as I ride my motorcycle around.
  • Be a better driver! I am much more present when I’m behind the wheel of my car. It makes me safer for myself and those around me.
  • Pack a hairbrush. Because it’s so necessary for helmet hair.
  • Take better care of my body and it’s basic needs. When you’re riding a motorcycle it’s important to get enough sleep, to make sure you eat at the right times, to avoid dehydration, and to wear sunblock. If you lose focus because you haven’t had enough protein for breakfast it can ruin your ride.
  • Gained an appreciation for the journey rather than the destination. I’ve always had an affinity for roads less traveled, but now I’m almost happier not getting to my destination… there’s just something lovely about shifting from goal based thinking to process based thinking. I love the ride.
