Season Sardines

last week I ran a 10K so the week before that (and the one before THAT) i was running 4 or 5 times a week. I had to increase my protein to Super High levels! one of the ways I did this was by eating lots of hard boiled eggs. Another way was to eat some sardines:

seasonsardines1

Season sardines were purchased at my local grocery store. They’re in olive oil – I used to eat sardines in water, but I don’t know if it’s worth it any more, really. the ones in oil are so much better.
seasonsardines2

when you crack open the tin you notice that there are three large pieces of fish in the tin. That’s it – just three big steaky pieces of sardine. no second layer, just hunks of fish. They were really good – kind of fishy, but heck, they’re sardines – but it was hard to break up these steaky sardines to eat on crackers (my preferred method). So on the one hand, it was a real novelty to eat such a large piece of tinned fish, on the other hand I was eating in a recliner and it was a messy process and I got fish oil on my skirt and had to wash it. They were good though! I would buy them over other brands.

ok! caught up! CSA Wk 5

Finally, up to date on CSA posts! pickup was tuesday the 10th – so I’m only 2 days behind. not too bad.

2007csawk5spinach, onions, 1 head lettuce, english peas, white turnips/radish, cilantro, broccoli.

now, I have to admit – when I started putting this stuff away I was in the depths of despair. HOW could I be SO FAR BEHIND when I was only on week 4? and then today when I looked through the photos I realized that I am on week 5! which makes more sense!

I sorted out all the old lettuce – I had heads in there from wks 2 and 3. THREE HEADS. so I washed and ate 2 1/2 heads of lettuce with trader joes green curry tuna on top. kind of a wilted lettuce salad. I had to toss the mizuna from wk 3. such an early failure! sigh. Today I ate the last of the blueberries – I gave away 4 pints but ate the other 8 pints myself (SO GOOD).

so this leaves me with:

wk 1 oregano (keeping pretty well in the fridge in a glass of water with it’s parsley and cilantro friends)

wk 2  white radishes, parsley, frisee (you can only eat so much of this at a time… I’m working my way through it!)

wk 3 white radish or turnip, broccoli,

wk 4 kohlrabi, cilantro, 2 heads of garlic, sugar snap peas, white turnips

I plan to cook the broccoli and kohlrabi tonight. I need to figure out what to do with those turnips/radishes/whatever. I think they’re meant for eating raw, because they’re SALAD turnips. maybe if I grate them and mix with something salady? or maybe I could slice them thinly and dress with an acidic dressing… sort of salad pickle. I’ll fiddle around with them at home. Tonight I am going to cook all the broccoli and make a cheese sauce to eat it with. I love broccoli and cheese, and if that is wrong, then I sure don’t want to be right.

CSA Wk 4

Again, very poor records! pickup was 7/3.

2007csawk4

and included kohlrabi, cilantro, 2 heads of garlic, sugar snap peas, white turnips, spinach, and bok choi.
This week, I tried to address the part where I was SO BEHIND. so I went crazy in the kitchen:

first I made dinner:

aruguala

my old standby: arugala wilted in garlic olive oil and tossed with toasted pine nuts and romano cheese over whole wheat pasta. so yummy. I ate a whole lot of it. thusly using up all the arugala from week 2.

then I made this garlic scape soup from supernatural cooking:

garlicscapesoup

it called for 24 garlic scape and all I had was 20, plus mine were a few weeks old, so it didn’t turn out as garlicy as I expected. it tasted like a green (good!) potato based soup. the green comes from spinach, by the way – and therein i used up the scape from wk 1 and the spinach from wk 4.

and then I sauteed all the bok choi from wks 2 and 4:
bokchoi

I saute in butter with splashes of soy sauce and eat over pasta or rice with nutritional yeast (or romano cheese). so tasty! this was made up for lunches over the week.

so after all this cooking, I was left with this in my fridge:

wk 1 oregano

wk 2  white radishes, parsley, lettuce, frisee

wk 3 blueberries, white radish or turnip, broccoli, 2 heads of lettuce, mizuna greens

wk 4 kohlrabi, cilantro, 2 heads of garlic, sugar snap peas, white turnips

CSA Wk 3

again, I was so busy/tired/etc. from work/running/etc. that I didn’t post or make careful notations of the CSA. Wk 3 was picked up on 6/26 and was Very Exciting!

2007csawk3

most of all exciting was the ENTIRE FLAT OF BLUEBERRIES I had an opportunity to buy. it was $45 extra. TOTALLY WORTH IT. um. as far as I’m concerned.

2007csawk3-2

in addition to the TOTALLY AWESOME AND EXCITING BLUEBERRIES, I received:
white radish or turnip, broccoli, green onions, 2 heads of lettuce, cilantro, 2 bunches of mizuna greens

still working on:

wk 1 20 garlic scape.
wk 2 white radishes, bok choi, parsley, lettuce, frisee, and spinach.

I did take the opportunity to shell and eat the english peas – I cooked them quickly in the microwave and tossed them with two chopped hard boiled eggs. it was SO INCREDIBLE. totally totally divine. Can’t even explain. and so quick and easy!

peasandeggs

During the week I also made and ate for dinner 3-avocado guacamole, using the green onions (which wilt pretty fast if you just toss them in your fridge, btw) and the cilantro.

CSA Wk 2

I’m posting all this way behind. My 2nd week pick-up was 6/19:

2007csawk2

obviously, I didn’t write down the vegs so I have no idea what I got. this list is MOSTLY correct and at least PARTIALLY complete:

white radishes, bok choi, parsley, english peas, lettuce, frisee, and arugala.

remaining from wk 1: one of the three heads of lettuce, garlic scape, and oregano.

how to be a lifelong reader

one of my internet friends passed along this link to “14 ways to cultivate a lifetime reading habit.” y’all may be able to tell from all of my books posts that I am a big reader – and I thought this was especially timely after an email from friend Kathleen telling me that she’s read 27 books so far this year – putting her well on her way to her goal of 50! Rock out with your bad self, Kathleen!

I would say that 10 of the tips on that list I do already, and the other four would require having a kid, buying books from used book stores (or having a local used book store), or scheduling times for reading. Scheduling time for reading has never been the problem… it’s the scheduling time for SLEEPING that gets me!

on being totally swamped

so, I’ve been totally swamped. to start with, I had to do damage control at my job for damage I wasn’t supposed to know about. which was a real hassle, but good in the end, I guess. and then to middle with, I’ve been running a LOT. I’ve got a 10K tomorrow that I’m running with some coworkers from the Philly office and I had to make sure I could run 10K! which is 6.2 miles! which is 2x as long as any other run I’ve done!

so I’m still awfully busy, at work, but hopefully the busiest worstest part (for now) is over. and that means I am free to carry on with my normally scheduled life. You may have noticed there have been no CSA posts: that’s because I haven’t had time to cook and eat any of my vegetables. You may have noticed there have been no book posts: that’s because even though I’m still reading lots, I haven’t had time to write down the books I’ve read. I’ve been eating lots of sardines to keep my protein intake up, but I haven’t told you about it! I’ve been exciting places and have seen exciting people, but natch, of course, no reporting back to you.

hopefully these dark days are over.

check check

testing out some new functionality…

dan aaron is the best.

last week my brother graduated from his 5-year electrician apprenticeship program. he is so super! I went up to troy and surprised him after his banquet at his local pub. (Props to Meredith, who managed to keep me a secret!) we had a super good time. with karaoke!
we like to sing.

you can tell he’s having an incredible time because he actually allowed me to take his photograph without squeezing or tickling:

he won a watch!

notice the watch in this photo? he won it! as an award! for having the highest grade in his class! he is so super!

there was arm-wrestling and rock’n’roll:

very serious arm wrestling interlude rock'n'roll!

he was so happy! and we are so pretty!

happy! pretty!

2007 CSA

I didn’t mention this earlier, but I switched my CSA this year. Paramus was just too hard to get to after work, and also, there weren’t any community activities. I have a new pickup in Montclair and so far they’ve had (and I’ve missed) a farm day and a membership meeting. This CSA is more grass-roots organized, and that’s what I like.

Last Tuesday was the first pickup!

CSA wk 1

there were three kinds of lettuce, oregano, radishes, and garlic scape. what a perfectly sized first CSA share! that said, I haven’t eaten a blame thing from it. I have been too busy at work and running around to actually wash lettuce. Sigh. Tomorrow is the second pickup and I’m behind all ready!

social internet hive minds

I’ve been screwing around on the internets more and more today – maybe because I’m staying super late to finish up a report, and I’ve kind of resigned myself to the idea that I’ll be here until 5AM.

anyway: one of the things I’ve been looking at is twitter. I’d heard a story about it on npr, and at first I thought it sounded kind of nuts. and then I thought about it and it sounded kind of NEAT. and then my good friend roz had it, and she kind of pushed me over the edge. and now I only have a couple of friends, but if any of y’all would like to sign up I sure wish you would.

I also put a app in the sidebar, which is kind of great. don’t expect anything earthshatteringly insightful – you only get 140 characters. but it’s a neat concept.

edited to add: I kind of love twitter b/c it gives me an out for all of the weird non sequiters that float through my head during the work day. that’s nice.

more of the same

lest you think this will be all running, all the time, let me start by saying my first CSA pickup is today! yay! so look forward to photos and food and scramble to eat everything, starting tonight.

and now back to running. ha! y’all know that I get kind of into stuff and totally obsess about it. the only difference here is that I actually HAVE to train, because I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of my co-workers. I mean, they handled the dance party and the arm wrestling ok, but will they handle the red face alright? or will they only be able to handle it if I am also a decent runner? what if I’m so slow everyone in the race finishes before me? I don’t want to be the last one.

* side note: michelle suggested the perfect karinajean triathalon: dance party, arm wrestling, and 10K. who wants to sign up? *

anyway, I’ve been running a lot. and talking about it all the time. and thinking about it all the time. I just bought new support undergarments specially designed for a woman of my… um. talents.  I bought fancy new socks. I bought some running shorts, but what I’m really interested in buying are some running skirts. (although wouldn’t it be nice if they were less “look girly-girl while running!” and more “be tough and comfortable in a skirt!”)

this is the amount of running I’ve done so far this week:

  • sunday: 4 miles
  • monday: reasonable pace 5K
  • tuesday: fast pace 5K

and this is the amount of protein I’ve eaten so far this week:

  • sunday: 2 fried eggs, then lots and lots of sushi at the best baby naming party/luncheon ever
  • monday: 2 hard-boiled eggs, a cup of a salad made mostly from crabs, tuna, and shrimp, and then a can of herring in lemon and cracked pepper.
  • tuesday: 2 hard-boiled eggs. and the day has just begun.

hopefully by eating lots of protein I can avoid eating lots of crackers and ice cream like I usually do when I dive into a new exercise regimen!

so, aren’t y’all so glad that my CSA starts this week so instead of blabbing about running and protein consumption I can instead blab about my fridge and how messy it is and how I need to clean it out and how I should have done it last night because tonight I’m getting my first shipment and shoot, there are still radishes in there or something from last season?

boy I hope there’s lots of leafy greens. and not any green beans. I need to start slow, and green beans are always the hardest thing for me to eat.

more running

I was so excited about the 5K last week that when a coworker invited me to run a 10K in washington’s crossing on July 4th I quickly canvassed my running-savvy friends and said yes. eek! I am pretty excited, but that is just over 3 weeks away. and I’m really really busy at work. but I’m sure I can do it if I run every day until then….

actually, there’s a 5-mile run the week before that will be really good for confidence. and today I ran 4.11 miles in 45 minutes, which is pretty super after a week of not doing anything. and that means that even if I don’t run at all after running 4 miles I will still be able to finish the 10K in about 1 hr 15 min., which would be pretty not-bad. I’m feeling good about this! I just hope my knee holds out… lots of stretching is in order.

freihofer’s run for women

the 5K went so well yesterday! michelle and I drove up friday night to fully represent team lois. everyone in my family showed up to watch meredith and rachel and I run, and it didn’t rain at all! we started together and once up the big hill rachel ran up ahead of us. I left meredith walking and then she ran up to me once she caught her breath!
our times were:

  • rachel 32:47
  • me 36:13
  • meredith 40:40

I am so proud of all of us. Rachel had only clocked a 40 min. 5K before but the race day excitement had her going fast and furious! Meredith had been walking 15 min. miles but she ended up run/walking at a pace of 13 min./mile. And considering I only had about 2 weeks of training, I am satisfied with my time. I had to walk a couple of times, and gym training doesn’t prepare you for humidity and hills, but I finished well under 40 min., and that was my goal. this was my first chipped race, and it’s kind of great to not have to kind of remember what time you cross the start line at so you can guess when you finish.

I think meredith and rachel may have caught the 5K bug! we talked a little bit about signing up for the run for the roses in grafton lakes state park on 8/12. other than that, my next planned 5K right now is the mid-july work one. but I’d like to find something in june to run as well with michelle. and then sept. 30 is the 10K Great Race in Pittsburgh.

33. The Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones
34. Little Women by Lousia May Alcott
35. Little Men by Louisa May Alcott
36. Jo’s Boys by Louisa May Alcott

44. The Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket
45. Sabriel by Garth Nix
46. Lirael by Garth Nix
47. Abhorsen by Garth Nix

No matter how many times I read Little Women it makes me cry at that ONE PLACE that I won’t specify in case someone out there hasn’t read it yet. It’s a great book, and Louisa May Alcott is one of my all time favorite authors.

The Diana Wynne Jones books were super, too! Lorelei recommended the Dark Lord of Derkholm and she was right, I did enjoy it. She also lent me the Garth Nix books, and I really enjoyed them too – I read all three in the series on Memorial Day.
I’m breezing my way through the Lemony Snicket books that I haven’t read yet – I love reading childrens books: it’s like eating sweet morsels of candy. they’re so super.

running

I’m scheduled to run the freihofer’s 5K for women on sat. and I haven’t done the comprehensive training that I would like. last night, though, I got on the treadmill and went for 3.1 miles. I finished that in 35:16, and it wasn’t that fun. I don’t know if it was just plain NOT FUN or if it was not fun because I was pushing myself too hard. I won’t finish as fast as I did the run last september (about 36 min) but as long as I’m under 40 min I will be happy, given the minimal training I’ve been doing. and also, given the big uphill that is at the beginning of the route and which I’ve been warned about.

I keep telling myself that when I’m good at running I will really love it. I interpret good as being able to run a 5K in about 30 min. without killing myself, I guess – to be at the point where I can just get up and it’s not a potentially overwhelming task to just tie on my shoes, and I can go outside or to the gym and run for a while and come home and it won’t be a huge production, just something I Do. and maybe that will happen – when I was playing goofy ultimate frisbee games I loved the running back and forth, and that glimpse of moving fast and freely and on my own two feet.

the training strategy of making other people sign up with me for runs is working really well so far! Rachel has been running for a few weeks now, and Meredith is a superstar, walking up big hills for conditioning. I’m so excited about the three of us being so active. I’m so excited that we’ve been making almost-daily activity a more regular part of our lives. and I’m so proud of the two of them! they are so super. Sat. will be superfun, no matter how fast we run (or apparently, how much it rains).

April 2007 Books

25. The Case of the Not-so-nice Nurse by Mabely Maney
26. The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
27. The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket
28. The Wide Window by Lemony Snicket
29. THe Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket
30. The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket
31. Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis

I’d read the Lemony Snickett books in early 2005, but I wanted to finish the series so I re-read them all. I brought Babbitt with me to Japan as a big heavy book that I wouldn’t finish right away and wish I had more, but it was so boring that it took a lot of effort to finish it once I got home. I guess it’s something I should be more into – it makes a sharp point about consumerism and america, and it was written in the 1920s, but boy. it was LONG.

also, I updated Feb and March book posts and backdated them. Sneaky! I WOULD have updated with May books, but there is an outside chance that I will read another book or two by the end of the month. and by “there is an outside chance that I will” I mean “I will probably.”

fisheyes

I got my photos back from my new lomo fisheye camera (thanks paula!) and they are so fun. I had forgotten how great film cameras are for color and weird surprises when you see the prints. I had also forgotten how hard it can be to wait for the prints to come back from the shop. even if it’s an online shop, it’s still a huge pain.

I took a bunch more this weekend under better light conditions, and I can’t wait to get them back!

busy busy week

man, but this week was so killer.

  • monday: normal day. mostly. busy but normal. meetings at work etc. to make things seem stagnant and unproductive.
  • tuesday: in normal time, out at 5:30 to meet serena for dinner in nyc. home and worked on stuff while sitting on couch.
  • wednesday: in to work by 6:30, leave at 3:45 and dash to NYC to try and buy worms from green market. thunderstorms have scared everyone away. head to alumni council meeting at 5:30-8. Home and more work while on the couch.
  • thursday: in to work by 6:30, leave at 4:45 to attend on the rooftop party. after party home. work on train in and out of city. work on couch for 45 min. until keep dozing off over keyboard. sigh.
  • friday: in to work by 7AM. trip to Trenton with client to the state for a meeting. back to work. tonight I need to make a dolly hand-off in n. brunswick after work so I need to stay here until 5:30 or 6 or so. I am so tired already! I think I might start drinking some coffee this afternoon.

on the upside, I did clear a lot of things off of my plate. on the downside I’m still behind on a couple of projects, and I have a deliverable to the state next friday. on the other upside, it’s friday! and I can get some rest tonight! bu7t on the other downside, I don’t know if I can sleep in tomorrow b/c for the last 3 weeks in a row there have been noisy men repointing my building.

I have to say, though, the friday thing trumps a lot of downsides. Thank GOODNESS I don’t have to come to work at 6:30 am tomorrow. THANK GOODNESS.

in the moment

I met a good friend for dinner in the city tonight and got back to my car at journal square at 9PM. it’s a beautiful night – somehow, summer has snuck up on me in NJ again. it seems like just yesterday that all the trees started tree-ing and flowers bloomed. but now it’s in the high 60s or low 70s at night and the sky as I walked through the village to the PATH train was deep brilliant blue, in that urban light pollution back-light kind of way.

I was driving west on rt 3 towards home listening to a neko case album and track 5 came on – track 5 is always the best and most singable, I think – and I turned up the stereo and started singing at the top of my lungs and threw my arm over the passenger side seat and cruised over the hackensack river and turned my head and made eye contact with someone passing me and I realized suddenly that I was entirely in that moment. the windows were open and my hair was whipping in the soft warm wind and I was loud and singing and happy and I was Right There. how super, you know?

I think a lot about where I AM, especially with all the driving I do. it’s so easy when you drive to and from work to get tied up in where you’re going, to live for the destination. Sometimes you will end up at work and not know how you’ve gotten there. I try to make the process part of the goal, but it’s really hard. So tonight was just wonderful.
